In a rocky Israeli crater, astronauts of the AMADEE-20 mission have set up a βMartian-likeβ station to simulate life on the red planet. During the one-month simulation, the team of five men and 1 woman sleep, eat and conduct experiments inside the expedition base, and explore the terrain wearing mock spacesuits with cameras and self-contained breathing systems. The project is run by the Austrian Space Forum together with the Israel Space Agency and local group D-MARS. While a manned mission to Mars may still be more than a decade away, the team hopes the experiment can help better prepare for a future Mars mission.
