Bears hibernate during colder months, they must store large amounts of fat before winter, but a decline in the animals’ staple foods such as salmon and acorns have led to some wandering into populated areas. The behavioural shift, considered a side-effect of climate change, has increased the risk of dangerous, and sometimes deadly, confrontations with humans.
