Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi returned to Tehran on October 19, 2022, after the Asian Championships in Seoul where she competed without a headscarf. Iran requires its women athletes to wear the hijab while competing abroad. While her supporters speculated this was an act of defiance against the Iranian government, Rekabi said the move was unintentional.
Since September, the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested over her hijab, has sparked unrest in Iran, with many women burning their headscarves in protest.
