Indonesia is in the midst of a major Covid-19 outbreak, with more than 25,000 daily infections and over 3,000 deaths in a week as of June 27, 2021. The surge, fuelled by millions who travelled during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr in May and the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, forced the government to implement its strictest Covid-19 measures yet this year on the islands of Java and Bali. However, epidemiologists warn the partial lockdown, which lasts until July 20, may not be enough to curb the outbreak.
