India will soon commission into service its first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. The 262-metre (860-foot) long vessel will be able to carry about 30 aircraft. It will also be equipped with 64 surface-to-air missiles with a reported strike range of 1,500km (930 miles). It has more than 2,300 compartments, including specialised cabins for women officers.
The ship is set to support “benign” tasks like disaster relief as well as military operations, Vice-Admiral and Chief of Indian Southern Naval Command M.A. Hampiholi said.
