Amid Sri Lanka’s worst-ever economic crisis, many of its people have been trying to escape the island nation. Many have sought to flee to Australia, where some have been detained and deported back to Sri Lanka, where they face prosecution. Among them is Neenu Mekala, whose husband has been jailed accused of smuggling his family and others like them out of the country. So far, some 911 people have been arrested in 2022 for attempting to leave Sri Lanka illegally.
