A series of earthquakes recorded in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan since June 1, 2022, have claimed at least four lives and injured over a dozen people. The latest quake on June 8 was measured at magnitude 6.1. The swarm has been reported in the same area where 196 people were killed by a major quake in April 2013. The central government has ordered an emergency response and sent about 4,500 local rescuers to the earthquake zone. The casualties were reported from the first earthquake on June 1, which was recorded at about 5pm at a depth of 17km (10.5 miles), with an epicentre 113km from the provincial capital of Chengdu. It was followed three minutes by a 4.5-magnitude quake a few kilometres away.
