The UK has ended its military mission in Afghanistan following a hasty exit of its last remaining troops some 20 years after the invasion following the September 11 attacks. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on July 8, 2021, that most British troops have pulled out of Afghanistan. The US is also set to finish withdrawing all its forces by August 31, despite the Taliban rapidly gaining control of rural areas. Afghan government forces, no longer backed by US-led Nato troops, have shown signs of collapsing, with soldiers abandoning their posts and retreating to neighbouring countries. US intelligence agencies believe the government in Kabul is now likely to fall within six months of the withdrawal, allowing the Taliban back in power 20 years after its overthrow. Chineses Foreign Minister Wang Yi offered China’s support for all parties in Afghanistan to seek a political solution through dialogue and lead to ethnic reconciliation and lasting peace.
