Customs officials at a port in Zhuhai in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong made a surprise discovery of a new species of cockroach while inspecting a shipment of logs infested with the insects on November 10, 2022. Experts at a laboratory at Gongbei Port later determined that the cockroaches found were a previously unidentified species from the Periplaneta latina genus.
