Conservationists in Taiwan are rushing to head off the spread of one of the most destructive invasive species on earth – the cane toad. Hundreds of the toads were found in recent weeks in Caotun township in central Taiwan, a place that’s now ground zero for the cane toad explosion. It’s believed local toad breeding, seen in the island as a symbol of good luck and fortune, is behind the toad population explosion despite a 2016 ban on the practice.
