Hundreds of civilian deaths were reported in Bucha on April 3, 2022, amid a grim reckoning that has followed the withdrawal of Russian troops from the city on the outskirts of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky got a first-hand look at the devastation on April 4 when he visited and spoke with city residents. Zelensky and Western leaders have accused Russian invasion forces of war crimes in Bucha, and world leaders have announced plans to ratchet up sanctions on Moscow. Russia has denied committing atrocities, with Moscow officials dismissing the allegations as “misinformation” about war crimes staged by Ukraine.
