Canada and Britain have joined Australia in a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing initiated by the US, in response to alleged human rights abuses in China. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on December 8, 2021, that his government was “deeply troubled” by the allegations. But South Korea reiterated its support for the Winter Games, expressing hope that they will contribute to peace in the Korean peninsula. Chinese officials say that the Winter Olympics is not a stage for “political posturing and manipulation”, and that the boycotts will not affect the success of the Games, due to take place from February 4-20, 2022.
