Thousands of protesters marched on the streets of major Australian cities over strict lockdown rules on August 21, 2021. In Melbourne, police used pepper spray to break up what they described as a “violent and unlawful protest”, with more than 200 people arrested. Lockdown has been extended across the country to contain a record surge of Covid-19 infections and an increasing number of Delta-variant cases.
