Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, who fled the country as Taliban fighters surrounded Kabul, has taken refuge in the United Arab Emirates. In a video uploaded to his Facebook page on August 18, 2021, Ghani said he had no intention of abandoning the country and plans to return. He also denied reports that he fled with large sums of money, saying he left Afghanistan with only the clothes on his back.
