In the summer of 2022, China experienced one of the worst heatwaves in its history. It left the nation reeling from devastating drought and high temperatures that affected nearly all aspects of society, from manufacturing to production of energy and food. It also had an impact on China’s environmental goals to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030, and net-zero emissions before 2060. Switching to renewable energy and converting to zero-emission vehicles are key focus areas for China to achieve its decarbonisation plans. But the heatwave and drought have underscored how renewable energy sources are themselves susceptible to the effects of climate change.
